Explore the city. Prove you were there.

RunCity turns a city into a checkpoint game. Walk or run to its landmarks, check in with your phone's GPS, and race the clock against everyone else who has played it.

Runs in your phone's browser. Nothing to download.

How it works

Three steps, one city at a time.

No QR codes to hunt for and no staff at the finish line. Your phone is the referee.

1

Pick a city

Each city has 10 to 12 checkpoints chosen for the walk between them: towers, squares, bridges, harbours and the odd hidden passage.

2

Get there, tap Validate

When you are standing at a checkpoint, tap Validate. RunCity takes one GPS reading and checks you are inside its radius. Some checkpoints also ask for a photo.

3

Climb the leaderboard

Every checkpoint scores points. Play casually at your own pace, or start the clock and see how fast you can clear the whole city.

Two ways to play

Race the clock, or take the long way round.

  • Timed. Start the clock when you set off. Pause for coffee; paused time does not count. Your time goes on the leaderboard.
  • Casual. No clock. Tick off checkpoints over an afternoon or a whole holiday.
  • Fair scoring. Check-ins are verified on the server: distance, GPS accuracy and travel speed between points. Photo check-ins are reviewed by a person.
  • Share your finish. Turn a check-in, a finished city or your rank into a card for your friends, with your route drawn as a map.
Cities

Eight cities, 88 checkpoints.

Every checkpoint's position is checked against OpenStreetMap, so the radius sits where you can actually stand.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Do I need to install an app?

No. RunCity runs in the browser on your phone. If you like, add it to your home screen and it opens full screen like any other app. It needs an internet connection and HTTPS for GPS and camera access.

Does RunCity track my location all the time?

No. Your location is read once when you tap Validate at a checkpoint. During a timed run you can choose to record your route so it can be drawn on your finish map; that recording stops when the clock is paused or finished. See the privacy policy for the details.

How do you know I was really there?

The server checks every check-in: how far you were from the checkpoint, how accurate the GPS fix was, and whether you could have travelled from your previous checkpoint that fast. Some checkpoints also ask for a photo of a specific detail, which a person reviews.

What does it cost?

Creating an account and looking around is free. Each city is unlocked separately; the app shows the price on the city before you unlock it.

Can I play on a different phone?

Yes. Log in with your username or email on any phone and your unlocked cities, check-ins and runs come with you.

I found a great spot that is not a checkpoint.

Save it from the map and add a note. Saved spots are suggestions we review, and the best become checkpoints.
